June
25, 1914 Salem faced the largest disaster in it's almost 300 year history.
The Great Salem Fire began in the section of Salem known as "Blubber
Hollow". The first alarm rang out at 1:37 PM, the fire quickly spread to
nearly one third of the city. Later in the year a member of Hose Company 2
Arthur B. Jones wrote the definitive book oh this conflagration. The Gorham
Press of Boston published the account.
The Collection owns
three copies. The first was dedicated to Hingham Fireman Arthur R. Kimball,
The second is inscribed by the author with the date December 25, 1918 and
the last is a standard copy for reading and research (photo above).
